West campus celebrates 140th graduation, honors alumnus Terry Schroeder, D.C.
Palmer College of Chiropractic’s West campus in San Jose, Calif., celebrated its 140th commencement at the Winter Quarter ’17 ceremony on March 10 in the Santa Clara Convention Center theater.
Frank Capobianco (Folsom, Calif.) and Ashley Uy (Trabuco Canyon, Calif.) graduated as class valedictorian and salutatorian, respectively, with Summa Cum Laude (3.9 – 4.0) and Magna Cum Laude (3.70 – 3.89) academic honors.
Michelle Snow (Tucson, Ariz.) also graduated with Magna Cum Laude honors.
Stephanie Defosse (Calgary, Alb., Canada), Kyle Grisius (Edmonton, Alb., Canada) and Erica Yu (Los Altos, Calif.) graduated with Cum Laude (3.50 – 3.69) honors.
Capobianco, Grisius, Uy and Snow also earned Presidential Scholar awards, which are presented to members of the class who achieved Dean’s List (3.50 GPA or above) honors in each of their 13 quarters of study at Palmer’s San Jose campus.
Ashley Uy also received the Clinical Excellence Award, as well as the Student Fellowship Award.
Selected by the clinical professors, the Clinical Excellence Award recognizes the member of the graduating class who has uniquely distinguished him- or herself during the internship portion of their educational experience at Palmer by performing the tasks of the student doctor with exceptional proficiency in the following categories: patient diagnosis, chiropractic technique, radiography, and case management.
The Student Fellowship Award is presented “in recognition of service and leadership while upholding the values of his or her class, college and profession.”
Erica Yu received the Virgil. V. Strang Philosophy Award, which is selected by a faculty panel and presented for “distinctive accomplishment and contributions to the philosophical principles of chiropractic as a student at Palmer College’s West campus.”
Jeff Grykuliak (Edmonton, Alberta, Canada), Daniel Hopper (New Fairfield, Conn.), Clayton Schuelke (Yuciapa, Calif.), and Ashley Uy received special recognition for their service as executive officers of the West campus Sports Council.
Daniel Hopper, Sara Lynn Marrs (Walnut Creek, Calif.) and Ashley Uy received special recognition for their service as members of the Campus Guides.
Tracy Lam (Rosemead, Calif.) and Erica Yu received special awards for their services as executive officers of the West campus student chapter of the American Chiropractic Association.
Terry Schroeder, D.C., a 1986 West campus graduate and six-time Olympian as player and coach of the men’s U.S. national water polo team, presented the commencement address, “Changing Lives.”
Dr. Schroeder also received a special Alumni Appreciation Award, presented, “In recognition of exemplary dedication to advancing Palmer College of Chiropractic as an Olympian in sport and alumnus in practice. … Through distinguished service to Palmer College, the chiropractic profession, and, most notably, your patients, you bring honor to your alma mater – and inspire the next generation of Palmer alumni.”
